Santa Cruz Mini Maker Faire 2017

The wait is over! The Santa Cruz Mini Maker Faire returns this weekend for a second year of making, tinkering, inventing, hacking, experimenting, and mostly, having fun.

Jam-packed with hands-on, interactive experiences, live music, performance art, food trucks and more, this gathering and celebration of Santa Cruz’s vibrant maker community is truly a family-friendly event—it’s as much fun for the kids as it is for the adults. Trust me, we were there last year.

So prepare to let off some STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics, that is—and be inspired. The Santa Cruz Mini Maker Faire runs 11:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday, April 29 at Gateway School, 126 Eucalyptus Ave.

Here are some highlights from last year’s inaugural faire as well as some tips for enjoying this year’s festivities.

This Weekend in Santa Cruz: April 28th – 30th, 2017

this weekend in santa cruz, april 28, 2017

It’s hard to believe it’s already the last weekend of April and we are well into spring. There’s reason to celebrate, because not only did April showers bring May flowers, but tax season is over, too.

The days are getting longer and nights are getting warmer, finally. It’s time to get out and enjoy all that Santa Cruz has to offer. There are many choices, including a day for independent bookstores, local performances and even The Santa Cruz Mini Maker Faire (see below for a chance to win free tickets). Some annual events are back this year, too, such as the open house at Moss Landing Marine Lab, and the UCSC Annual Plant Sale.

There are a lot of things to do out there this weekend, so check them out and have some fun. The weather’s expected to be warm and sunny, too. Enjoy!

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Concerts

The Boardwalk isn’t just for roller coasters and deep-fried cheesecake.  Every Friday night from mid-June through August, the award-winning seaside amusement park hosts free outdoor concerts, featuring hit bands from the ’60s through current day recording artists.

A concert on the beach is not only a chance to hear great live music.  It’s a little slice of sun-soaked paradise, a perfect fusion between natural and synthetic beauty.  To look out at the pale blue sky above the deep tapestry of blues in the ocean while hearing Papa Doo Run Run, a Boardwalk concert staple, perform “Surfin’ USA” is to attain the status of a perfectly picturesque summer evening in Santa Cruz.

Free Movies on the Beach

Santa Cruz Boardwalk Movies

The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk has been featured in a lot of movies — Dangerous Minds, Sudden Impact, Harold and Maude, and The Lost Boys, to name a few — but that’s not its only tie to cinema.  The Boardwalk also hosts free movies on the beach Wednesday nights every summer at 9:00 p.m.

And to make it even better, Wednesdays after 5 p.m. are Pepsi Nights, meaning unlimited ride wristbands only cost $14.95 if you bring an empty Pepsi can.  You can tire yourself out by working in a full four hours of rides, then lay back on a beach towel or lean back in a low beach chair and watch the big screen on the beach with your friends, family, or special someone.
