It’s a little hard to go into the weekend events knowing our Santa Cruz Mountains residents are facing the Loma Fire. We are sending out our very best thoughts for safety for all, especially the firefighters working hard to contain it.

This weekend’s lineup features a grand opening celebration, 150th birthday beach party, a multicultural film festival, and the first weekend of Open Studios Art Tour.

Anniversary celebrations will also be had for event creator, Event Santa Cruz, as well as the Santa Cruz Guitar Company.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival Radical Reels Tour takes place at The Rio and fall kicks off with the Santa Cruz Mountains Harvest Festival and Halloween prep in a class series designed to have you dancing Michael Jackson’s Thriller choreography.

This Weekend in Santa Cruz: Sep. 16th-18th, 2016

There’s something fun to do all over Santa Cruz County this weekend, from Scotts Valley to Happy Valley, Felton to Watsonville, and lots of places in between.

We love the sheer variety of events enticing us to get out and volunteer, support local causes and organizations, and try new things: a bicycle scavenger race, anyone?

Or maybe we’ll see you at the County Fair…we’ll be the ones cheering loudly for those cute racing pigs. Have a good one!

Berry Creek Falls: Big Basin’s Bucket List Hike

Berry Creek Falls

When a magical waterfall in the mountains is only a couple hours hike from the beach, we like to call that a Santa Cruz Life moment.

But how about three waterfalls, all within a mile of each other?

That’s what we call a bucket list item and we want to help you cross it off your list.

Here are some tips to reach Berry Creek Falls and more at Big Basin Redwoods State Park, starting from the ocean.

Your adventure begins with a drive up Highway 1, north of Santa Cruz. [Read more…]

4th Annual Mole & Mariachi Festival: Sept. 10, 2016

Mole & Mariachi Festival-4

If wearing white after Labor Day is a fashion faux pas, it’s a good thing the Mole & Mariachi Festival takes place after the holiday. It could get messy!

The 4th Annual Mole & Mariachi Festival will take over Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park on Saturday, September 10, celebrating the famous sauce and signature dish of México.

Prepared with an average of twenty ingredients, from nuts and seeds to chiles and oftentimes chocolate, moles from ten local chefs including restaurants, catering companies, and home cooks, will be available for sampling at the festival.

As festival regulars and judges in this year’s mole cooking competition, we have three pieces of advice: arrive early, come hungry, and save room for dessert.

Here’s what’s in store at this year’s Mole & Mariachi Festival: [Read more…]

This Weekend in Santa Cruz: August 26th – 28th, 2016

There’s much to do and enjoy this last weekend of August, or Fog-ust, as many of us have dubbed it.

Music outdoors? We’ve got that—at the beach, in the park, and even in the swimming pool.

Grand openings are always fun and West Marine’s promises to deliver each day this weekend.

We’ve also highlighted opportunities to help the environment, support local farmers, check out a play on social justice, and get your holistic health on. Have a good one!

Many summer event series are winding down, so if you’ve been meaning to attend Sunday Art & Music on the Beach, Free Friday Night Bands on the Beach, or a good ole fashioned family campfire, this is the weekend to make it happen.

You’ll also want to make room to enjoy a couple of local festivals. Scotts Valley brings another fantastic 2-day celebration of Art, Wine & Beer and the Santa Cruz Wharf shows its aloha spirit at Sunday’s Polynesian Festival.

As always, you’ll find a host of additional events listed under our features, including nature outings at our state parks and beaches, live music, and more.

Premier Rock Band & Local Artists Rally for Sobranes Fire Relief at Kuumbwa Jazz this Saturday

The following is a guest post by Stevee Stubblefield. Stevee is the founder of Do it Ourselves Presents, a homegrown Santa Cruz production company that, faced with having to cancel an upcoming show in Big Sur, rallied to relocate the event to Kuumbwa Jazz Center as a benefit the Soberanes Fire Relief Fund. Join us this Saturday for great music, art, and help support a great cause while you’re at it. Details below…

sobranes fire benefit concertIt’s impossible to tell what life will bring – none of us saw this massive fire coming. I was at Pleasure Point looking south as the first ominous plume of smoke rose to the south, sure that something was seriously wrong.

I definitely wasn’t thinking the fire would still be burning weeks later, running through the iconic canyons, pushing brave residents and firefighters to the limit. I definitely wasn’t thinking about concerts, or last-minute venue changes, or business at all. None of that stuff mattered. It paled in comparison to the gravity of the fire and the lives of those effected.

So it was a no brainer when we at Do it Ourselves Presents… decided to cancel our upcoming show at Henry Miller Library in Big Sur. There was simply no way. But how could we do something better than just cancel and give up? Could we turn it into a benefit for the fire? Or rally support somehow? [Read more…]
