Rich chocolate cupcakes, warm apple pie, and……. organic grilled vegetables?
That’s right, you can have it all! Health nuts and dessert lovers alike rejoice at The Buttery.
A bustling cafe on the corner of Soquel and Branciforte, The Buttery has been serving up delicious meals and baked treats for almost thirty years.
It all began when Janet Platin, founder and owner, decided to put her years of culinary experience to the test by opening her own European style cafe. She started with just two cases of breads and pastries. The Buttery has since grown into a vibrant local restaurant.
Fresh Bread and Pastries
Warm sticky buns. Flaky chocolate croissants. Or maybe a crumbly pecan sandy. You really can’t go wrong in choosing pastries at The Buttery. The Buttery describes eating their pastries as a “sensuous” experience. Having enjoyed many of their fine pastries, I can attest to this statement. You can get lost in the rich buttercream frosting and go starry eyed for their fresh fruit galettes. They have perfected their recipes over the past twenty eight years to provide the ideal texture, sweetness, and melt-in-your-mouth goodness.
If sweets aren’t your thing, try one of their fresh baked breads. They have everything from whole wheat and sourdough to German rye and fresh baguettes. Or you can get one of their daily specials, like oatmeal bread or raisin pumpernickel. Check ahead of time to see their special of the day.
Not Just a Bakery
In addition to their gourmet pastries and cakes, the Buttery serves hearty breakfast and lunch options. For breakfast, try their French toast or Frittata of the day. They also have kid friendly choices like oatmeal and seasonal fruit.
For lunch, my personal favorite is the grilled vegetable and goat cheese sandwich on toasted foccacia bread. I have even been known to forego the French toast and enjoy this tasty sandwich for breakfast. However, for omnivores there are plenty of meat dishes available like the hot pastrami and caramelized onion or barbecued chicken sandwich. They also serve soup and salad.
Wedding Cakes and Catering
The Buttery designs and creates unique wedding cakes to celebrate your special day. You can browse their online gallery of cakes or come up with your own idea. Either way, they work with you to make your wedding cake spectacular.
Not getting married but still want great food delivered? The Buttery caters events of all sizes with fresh appetizers, entrees, and desserts. They will help you plan a menu for your event so you can just relax and enjoy it, without the stress of cooking all day. They even cater holiday meals for extended families. So whether you are planning a huge event or just a small family gathering, The Buttery can help you plan the perfect meal.

I can’t say I go to the Buttery for the grilled vegetables, but it’s nice to know they’re there. My love affair with the Buttery started with a chocolate-strawberry shortcake for my college graduation party. I think they also have the best carrot cake in town. It’s also one of the first landmarks my kids recognized when driving around town, shouting, “THE BUTTERY!”
Mmmmm…chocolate-strawberry shortcake sounds delicious! Will have to try that one for sure. The Pecan Sandies are our household favorite. My wife and I also got our wedding cake from the Buttery. Best cake I’ve ever had!
