This weekend kicks off with a celebration of the best and brightest in Santa Cruz on Friday evening (complete with red carpet!).
We’ll also be treated to a hometown derby bout, the Arboretum’s annual Spring Plant Sale, a one-of-a-kind event that cat owners won’t want to miss, a fashion show, a special wildflower walk, and a live performance so good it’s being broadcast from Moscow.

2016 Nexties

Where: Rio Theatre
Cost: $40 online, $50 at the door
This year the Nexties are going to the next level. The expanded awards show includes 14 categories this year (up from 5 last year), and an after party with Coffee Zombie Collective. There will be live music from Nick Gallant and Heather Christie, small bites from some local favorites, and beer from Humble Sea Brewery.

Jazz for Freedom Concert Series
When: 4/9 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Where: Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History
Cost: Admission is free, donations are accepted
This Saturday the MAH will host the Jazz for Freedom Concert Series, with Jack Bowers and Friends. Sponsored by Barrios Unidos, the event will raise awareness of mass incarceration in our criminal justice system.
UCSC Arboretum Spring Plant Sale
When: 4/9. Members only from 10:00 am to noon. General public from noon to 4:00 pm
Where: UCSC Arboretum Eucalyptus Grove
The Arboretum’s annual Spring Plant Sale will feature drought tolerant succulents, small trees and a variety of plants from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Bird watchers are in luck, as this year’s selection will feature many plants to attract birds, primarily hummingbirds. Arboretum experts will be available to assist you with any plant related questions.
Santa Cruz Derby Girls Steamer Janes vs the Redwood Rebels
When: 4/9 from. Doors: 5:45 PM. Frist whistle: 6:30 PM

What’s better than watching a Santa Cruz Derby Girls team take on a rival opponent?
How about two Santa Cruz Derby Girls teams squaring off? Hometown teams, the Steamer Janes and Redwood Rebels face off on Saturday, playing for bragging rights, and looking to take a step towards the local championship.
Viva La Lehrer III — Celebration of the Life and Songs of Tom Lehrer
When: 4/9 at 6:30 pm & 8:45 pm
Where: Kuumbwa Jazz Center
Cost: $22/Advance $25/Door
20 local musicians and performers will pay tribute to pop culture icon Tom Lehrer in the Third Annual Celebration of the Life and Songs of Tom Lehrer. Performers include Gail Rich Award recipients Joe Ferrara and Ukulele Dick with Jayme Kelly Curtis. Also performing will be Steve Wilson, Kylan deGhetaldi, The Lehrermen, and the Gold Standard barbershop quartet Constellation. There are two shows, one at 6:30, followed by a second show at 8:45.
First Annual Santa Cruz County Catio Tour
When: 4/9 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
Where: Santa Cruz County

Hat’s Off to Spring’ Fashion Show

Seascape plays host to the Hats Off to Spring Fashion show. Enjoy brunch, a trunk show with a dozen local boutiques offering their finest, and of course, the fashion show. Partial proceeds beneft Caroline’s Non-Profit Thrift Store.
Trek to the Forbidden Sandhills
When: 4/10 from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm (additional dates: 4/17 & 4/24)
Where: Quail Hollow Ranch
Cost: Free
April is the best (and only) time to visit the flower-covered hills of the protected sand parkland habitat. This weekend is the first of three Sundays in April to join a guided tour of these rare species. These are small tours and are likely to fill up quickly.
The Bolshoi Ballet presents Don Quixote
