Football fans will be focused on the Superbowl, but if you’re reading this then you know there’s much more to enjoy this weekend.
Looks like we’ll be due for more rain, but that won’t put a damper on the Warriors Friday night game or the full slate of First Friday events throughout the county. This weekend also offers inspiring live performances, an out-of-rink experience with the Derby Girls…and some half-naked comedians.

First Friday
There’s just something special about the first Friday of the month. It’s practically a holiday in Santa Cruz, where we celebrate art and artists, live music, and free admission to some pretty cool places.

- Seymour Marine Discovery Center – Touch a friendly shark!

Dance of the Deer Ceremony

Where: Pacific Cultural Center

Experience ancient ritual and sacred celebration with Brant Secunda, an internationally acclaimed shaman, healer, and teacher in the indigenous Huichol tradition of Mexico.
Santa Cruz Warriors vs. Iowa Energy
When: 2/3 at 7:00 pm
Where: Kaiser Permanente Arena
Cost: $20 – $68
The Warriors host the Iowa Energy this Friday after another exciting win last weekend. The first 1,500 fans will receive a Santa Cruz Warriors mouse pad.
4th Annual Food from the Heart
When: 2/3 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
Where: Chaminade Resort & Spa
Cost: $60 – $550
Chaminade hosts the 4th Annual Food from the Heart event, benefiting Meals on Wheels. Enjoy catered lunch with live music, a keynote speech from Assemblymember Mark Stone, a live auction and a tasting room with local food vendors.
UC Santa Cruz Satellite Reef Crochet Circles
When: 2/3 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Where: Seymour Center
Novice and experienced crocheters are welcome to put their crochet skills to the test creating a crochet coral reef. You’ll learn hyperbolic crochet techniques and your creations will be part of UCSC’s Satellite Reef project.

The Comic Strippers ! Improv Comedy Show!

If your idea of a good time skews more toward comedy club than strip club, then you’ll love this at times risque parody of male strippers, featuring some of Canada’s most beloved improv comedy actors. Just be sure to leave the little ones at home for this show.
Tell Me More Spoken Word and Solo Performance

Where: Broadway Playhouse
Cost: $10
Join Santa Cruz county’s newest solo performance group, Tell Me More, as they share spoken word performances that will shock, delight, and even make you laugh.
Derby Girls Cleanup @ San Lorenzo River

Where: San Lorenzo Riverwalk
Cost: Free
Save Our Shores and the Santa Cruz Derby Girls team up this Saturday for the 3rd Annual Derby Girls Cleanup at the San Lorenzo River. This is your chance to help keep the river beautiful and healthy by participating in this cleanup. And of course, getting to hang out with some Derby Girls off the rink isn’t a bad perk.
