It’s the first weekend of the month, which means mainstays like First Friday and the Antique Faire are happening — but those aren’t the only worthwhile events going on.
Here are our picks for the best events of the weekend:
Greek Food & Cultural Festival
When: 9/6-9/8
A favorite in Santa Cruz for 33 years, the Greek Festival at the Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church downtown proves that the key to understanding any culture is through the food. Though there will be plenty of music and art of the Mediterranean variety, eat and drink dominate this festival, from spanakopita to baclava.
Fermentation Festival
When: Saturday, 9/7
Fermentation produces some of the best treasures known to humankind, like, cheese, beer, sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, and way more. The Santa Cruz MAH has taken note and will be holding Counter Cultures, a celebration and study of all these funky foods. Tickets are on a sliding scale of $15-$35.
Blonde Redhead at the Rio
When: Friday, 9/6
Alternative Rock band Blonde Redhead’s third record, 4AD, will be officially release on September 14th, but you could get a live sneak peak of the album this Friday at the Rio. For only $25 at the door you can enjoy the band’s indie-electro sound. Go to Charlie Hong Kong’s before for a couple of Tsingtaos to make a night of it.
Big Kahuna Triathlon
When: Sunday, 9/8
Beginning and ending at the Boardwalk, the Big Kahuna Triathlon has the usual biking, swimming, and running, but the selling point is the coastal view visible during most of the race. Interested participants can register here.
