This weekend will bring opportunities to participate in and watch athletic events, and volunteer to help the community. Here are our top pick for this weekend’s events.
Annual Coastal Cleanup
When: Saturday 9/21
Local organization Save Our Shores does a lot of good for the Santa Cruz area, and this Saturday is an opportunity to do your part in helping them.
Last year about 3,500 volunteers removed over 16,000 pounds of trash from various beaches around Santa Cruz and Monterey. You can sign up here to be part of this year’s fleet.
Professional Banked Track Roller Derby
When: Saturday 9/21
The Santa Cruz Derby Girls are some of the raddest women in town, but their style of roller derby is more modern than the sport of the 60s and 70s that inspired it.
If you want to see how it was done back in the day, you can go watch the men and women of the San Francisco Bay Bombers take on the Brooklyn Red Devils at the Civic Auditorium.
Surf City AIDS Ride
When: Sunday 9/22
Since beginning 13 years ago, this bike to benefit AIDS survivors has raised $240,000.
You can register today for any of the races, which range from 12 to 100 miles. Each route begins at the Santa Cruz County courthouse, and they all offer a great view.
Movies at the Mission
When: Saturday, 9/21
The Santa Cruz Mission is the oldest building in Santa Cruz, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go there to enjoy more modern amenities, like movies.
This Saturday, Anchorman will be projected onto an adobe wall and Mexican cuisine will be served to all who come to enjoy.
Bring a blanket or low chairs to maximize your viewing pleasure, and stay classy, Santa Cruz.
