Okay, there is a lot going on this weekend. So much going on that we don’t even have time for clever lead-in paragraphs.
Here are our picks for your best bets this Friday through Sunday…
MAH Pop-Up Museum: Santa Cruz Wharf
When: Saturday, 10/12
The Santa Cruz Wharf turns 100 years old next year, and the Museum of Art and History will kick off celebrations early with one of its charming pop-up museums. As a bonus, brush up on your local history with this gorgeous educational video.
Eat Local First
When: Saturday 10/12
Think Local First always encourages Santa Cruzans to choose local businesses over chains, and restaurants make up a big contingency of the organization. This Saturday at the Aptos Farmers’s Market, you’ll get a chance to speak with the behind-the-scenes forces of some of your favorite local restaurants.
Welcome Back Monarchs Day
When: Sunday 10/13
Monarch butterflies have multigenerational migration patterns — that means that once a monarch leaves a particular place, like Santa Cruz, to go north or south, the butterflies that return will be their grandchildren. So when you welcome back the butterflies to Natural Bridges, you’ll actually be welcoming them to town for the first time — which is all the more reason for a celebration.
‘Out of This World’ Family Night
When: Friday 10/11
We’re lucky enough in Santa Cruz to be able to see the stars most nights, provided there isn’t any fog. But Watsonville-based Orion Telescopes and Binoculars is hosting a night at Props restaurant to make sure people can see the whole picture. There will be high-quality equipment as well as experts there to answer you and your kids’ questions, as well as a special space-themed menu to enjoy.
Oktoberfest
When: Saturday 10/12
This Oktoberfest is bound to be a lot more family-friendly than the beer-sloshed celebration in Germany. The Palm Deli in Aptos is hosting their own version of the autumn tradition, featuring multiple kids rock bands. All proceeds will go to Grind Out Hunger and Be Natural Music Scholarship Program.
