King Tides have brought extreme high and low tides to Santa Cruz the past couple days, and will continue to do so through Thursday.
The high tides give some insight into how rising sea levels impact our coastal regions. However, it’s the low tides that are drawing crowds. These extreme low tides, combined with warm and sunny December days, are proving to be a tidepooling paradise.
The low tides drew crowds to Pleasure Point Monday and Tuesday, and should continue to do so through Thursday. High/Low tides through the end of this week, according to Surf-Forecast.com:
- Wednesday – High Tide: 6.6 feet at 9:23 am, Low Tide: -1.5 feet at 4:15 pm
- Thursday – High Tide: 6.5 feet at 10:13 am, Low Tide: -1.4 feet at 4:59 pm

And if you’re lucky you just might spot an ancient sea monster.
King Tides occur a few times each year. If you don’t get out to enjoy the tide pools this time around then you’ll have another chance later in the month when the King Tides return Jan. 29 – 31.
