This is a big weekend for surf fans and brides to be.
Mavericks Invitational and the annual Bridal Expo bookend what looks to be another beautiful Santa Cruz weekend.
Other weekend events include concerts, kids activities and more.
Here are our picks for the best events in Santa Cruz this weekend:
Mavericks Invitational
When: Friday, 1/24
First, the bad news: unless you’re surfing in the competition, or on a boat, you won’t be able to watch the action in person.
Now the good news: there are more options for watching the event this year than ever before. The viewing festival and awards ceremony is on the grounds of the Oceano Hotel & Spa in Princeton Harbor, down the road from Mavericks.
Also, for the first time the event will be televised live on Universal Sports Network. You will be able to tune in on the Mavericks Invitational website.
Solaire Restaurant + Bar at Hotel Paradox will also be playing the contest at their bar.
Winterpalooza
When: Saturday, 1/25
Mother nature has been providing us with warm summer weather throughout January, but this Saturday you can head indoors at the MAH to enjoy winter themed arts and crafts at Winterpalooza. The event starts at noon, and includes a very creative opera that kids will love.
Find out more over at the MAH website.
Water Concert
When: Saturday, 1/25
The Surfrider Foundation presents the Water Concert at the Catalyst this Saturday. The concert is indented to raise awareness about our use of freshwater and the health of our ocean and beaches.
Musical acts include Eliquate, Louder Space, Otto’s Monkey and Blue Eyed Lucy.
Find out more here.
Bridal Expo
When: Sunday, 1/26
The 2014 Santa Cruz Bridal Expos is this Sunday at the Cocoanut Grove, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm.
You will get to meet prospective wedding vendors (there will be 100 of them at the event), sample food from caterers, and enter to win some amazing prizes. Get more info.
Admission is $7.00, but you can download a $2 off coupon, here.
Sing For Your Life
When: Sunday, 1/26
The Gold Standard Chorus, a local barbershop group, is putting on their annual Sing For Your Life event this Sunday at the Crocker Theater at Cabrillo. The event brings together 300 students from 8 local high schools.
Choirs from each school will take turns performing. The finale brings all 300 students together on stage for a rendition of, “Keep the Whole World Singing.” Read more about Sing For Your Life in a recent Sentinel article, or visit the Gold Standard Chorus website for more information.
