Bestselling Author Ishmael Beah
When: 1/17
Join bestselling author Ishmael Beah for a book signing and discussion with Sentinel columnist Wallace Baine. Note that while this is a Bookshop Santa Cruz event, it is taking place at the Santa Cruz High theater. Get more info here.
Tainted Love
When: 1/17
Relive the 1980’s with Tainted Love at the Catalyst. This 80’s cover band plays all the biggest hits from the decade of excess.

Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Weekend
When: 1/17 – 1/19
The Resource Center for Nonviolence and the NAACP Santa Cruz County Branch will be hosting events throughout the weekend to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Events include a Friday night concert with Grammy-nominated folk musician John MCutcheon, the annual MLK Jr. Gospel Night on Saturday, and Youth Day on Sunday.

Passport Days
When: 1/18
30+ wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains welcome guests with pairings of artisan wines, gourmet food, and live entertainment. Wineries that are closed to the public are only open during Passport Days, which occur four times each year.

Soquel Creek History Tour
When: 1/18
Historian Frank Perry and the Coastal Watershed Council are offering a walking tour, complete with history lesson, along the Soquel Creek on Saturday morning.

Save Our Shores Monthly Beach Cleanup
When: 1/18
Join Save Our Shores for the monthly beach cleanup at Seacliff Beach.

Wharf Wildlife Eco Tour
When: Saturdays & Sundays throughout 2014, beginning on 1/18
Free 30 minute guided tours of the wharf will be offered each Saturday and Sunday in 2014, starting on 1/18. Guides from the Seymour Marine Discovery Center will lead you on a tour where you’ll learn about sea lions, dolphins, otters, starfish and other native wildlife. Tours are offered between 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Meet at the stage next to Marini’s and Olitas. Call 831-459-3800 for more details.
Synergy Sale
When: 1/18 – 1/20
Synergy Organic Clothing is having a huge 50% off sale this weekend at both their downtown store, and the Synergy outlet.
Everything in the store will be 50% off, and they will also be setting up vending tents in the parking lot behind their outlet store at 1126 Soquel Ave.
A portion of all sales from this weekend will go to Martin Luther King Jr. charities.
Moore Creek Twilight Walk
When: 1/18
The Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History hosts this twilight walk at the Moore Creek Preserve. The walk will include nocturnal animal tracking, sensory activities, and night sky viewing.

Malone’s Grill will be holding the second qualifying round of the Scotts Valley Idol Karaoke competition on Saturday night. The competition goes through Feb. 8, and includes over $1,000 in prizes. Get more info here.

The 7th annual Santa Cruz Chocolate Festival is this Sunday, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm, at the Cocoanut Grove.
