This Weekend in Santa Cruz: February 28th – March 1st, 2020

Every four years we get an extra day, and that day falls this weekend! Make the most of your leap year weekend watching the Warriors leap and dunk. 

Have some laughs and help send minority students from Santa Cruz High on a college visit by attending a benefit stand-up comedy show.

As always there is plenty of great live music of all kinds and many opportunities to learn about our diverse community.

Friday

SANTA CRUZ WARRIORS VS. RIO GRANDE VALLEY VIPERS

When: 2/28 at 7:00 pm
Where: Kaiser Permanente Arena

Our very own G-league Warriors celebrate Black History Month. The first 1500 fans will receive a Klay Thompson headband edition bobblehead, AND each ticket holder will get a SC Warriors Black History t-shirt and be treated to a halftime show celebrating the achievements and contributions of African Americans by local phenom Tammi Brown, who will also grace the game by performing the national anthem.

Jazz & Friends National Day of School & Community Readings

When: 2/29 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm
Where: Santa Cruz Downtown Branch Library

Are you looking for ways to better understand or compassionately inform others about what it means to be transgender? This community reading of the book I Am Jazz is your chance to learn and show solidarity and support for transgender and non-binary people.

Santa Cruz High BSU Benefit Comedy Show

When: 2/29 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Where: Louden Nelson Community Center

If you want to stand up for equality, then sit down and enjoy some laughs. The Black Student Union at Santa Cruz High is holding a benefit comedy night featuring stand up comedy stars. Proceeds will help send students of color on a history/college visit tour, enhancing their understanding and prospects for further education.

Where: Kaiser Permanente Arena

Celebrate this leap year watching our talented G-league team take on the Austin Spurs. These amazing players are all the more thrilling to watch because they are the less well known, up-and-coming future stars of the game. The giveaway is a Warriors beach towel and who can’t use that?

RIO THEATRE: AN EVENING WITH LEO KOTTKE

When: 2/29 at 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm
Where: Rio Theatre

Legendary 12-string guitarist Leo Kottke plays his distinct blend of jazz, blues and folk at the Rio for one night only. With a depth of talent and experience, you don’t get to hear many musicians of this caliber very often.

Anthony Arya with Preacher Boy & Patti Maxine

Another chance to cross the generational divide is to head to the Symphony’s Family Concert. This is always a blast for children, who can experience the joys of the orchestra and are encouraged to join in and have an up-close experience with the conductor and his players. This is an opportunity for classical music lovers of all ages to let down their hair and have some fun.
