The weather is getting colder (at least, some of the time — after all, this is Santa Cruz) but that doesn’t mean there’s any shortage of fun things to do in the area.
Here’s our list of best bets for this weekend.
Open Studios
When: Saturday 10/19 & Sunday 10/20
This is the third and final weekend of Open Studios. Encore weekend features 240 North and South County artists. Check out the following links for our complete Open Studios coverage:
Wilder Ranch Heritage Harvest Festival
When: Saturday 10/19
It may not be Thanksgiving quite yet, but the harvest has come to Santa Cruz! Celebrate Santa Cruz history with live demonstrations, live music, crafts, and more hands-on activities this Saturday.
Beer, Brats and Blues
When: Sunday 10/20
Local beer-makers Discretion Brewers serve up an awesome Rye IPA, among other beers, and this Saturday you can sample them all at the Chaminade resort while you also eat sausage, listen to some blues, and enjoy the company of other beer-loving Santa Cruz locals. What makes this even better is that Discretion invited some of their peers, like Santa Cruz Ale Works and Seabright Brewery, to join in the fun. Thirty bucks gets you the whole package.
Pacific Rim Film Festival
When: 10/17 through 10/23
Showing this weekend on screens across Santa Cruz County: a diverse array of feature films about and/or made by individuals connected to the Pacific Rim. Some interesting titles include Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Silk Road of Pop, and Zoot Suit. All films are free, except for closing night.
GLOW at the MAH
When: Saturday 10/19
Glow in the dark isn’t just for little kids shoes and ravers’ glow sticks anymore. The MAH is hosting a night of glowing masterpieces, from LED hula hoops to giant shadow puppets. For only ten dollars a ticket, you can give your eyes a treat this Friday night.
Sound of Music Sing-Along
When: Saturday 10/19
Getting sick of watching your kid’s favorite Disney DVD every single weekend? Take them out to a classic at the Rio, where the whole family can sing along to The Sound of Music. If your the type to dress up, give the costume contest a whirl. Here’s hoping your Julie Andrews impression extends from your blonde coif to your singing voice.
