School’s out for summer and this weekend is packed with free community events for all.

First Friday festivities are in full swing at two local museums and beyond, including a street festival right outside the MAH.

Get outdoors Saturday at the Japanese Cultural Fair, Gerbera Festival, or Capitola Rods and Custom Classic Car Show.

Savor Sunday with a good book, or better yet, head to San Lorenzo Park and sign up for reading all summer long.

Friday

Ebb & Flow 2019

When: 6/7 from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm
Where: Tannery Arts Center
Cost: Free

This community event brings together visual and performing arts with ecology and environmentalism to celebrate and appreciate our life-giving river, the San Lorenzo. There will be tons of interactive activities, performances, food trucks and beer. It’s a great way to learn about our ecosystem and enjoy the immense beauty of Santa Cruz!

First Friday at the Museum: California’s Coastal Birds with Jacqueline Deely

When: 6/7 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Where: Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History
Cost: Free

The Museum of Natural History kicks off its Summer Art Series with the debut of “California’s Coastal Birds,” a photography exhibit with a message of conservation. Meet the artist, Jacqueline Deely, and enjoy wine, snacks, and free admission to the museum.

June First Friday at the MAH: Do It Together

When: 6/7 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Where: The MAH
Cost: Free

A special First Friday is in store as the MAH sends Executive Director Nina Simon off in style. In true Nina Simon spirit, the “Do It Together” theme invites the community to participate and get hands-on with art activities and performances. Enjoy free admission to the museum all day, and a street festival and live music in the evening.

The Venardos Circus

Where: San Lorenzo Park

Aerial, acrobatic, and magical thrills await those who enter the famous red and white striped circus tent. Bring the family for this musical production that features a cast of critically-acclaimed human performers (Hint: no animals).

Yōso Wellness Grand Reopening Celebration and Fundraiser

Where: Yōso Wellness Spa, 740 Front Street

Yōso Wellness Spa is celebrating its grand reopening celebration and the whole community is invited! Visit the new downtown location and enjoy live music, First Friday art, food, drinks, and an awesome array of raffle prizes, plus, face painting for the kids! Proceeds from the event will benefit Monarch Services, a local program that supports victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

An Evening with The Divorce Dress

You don’t need to be divorced to experience The Divorce Dress, a collection of stories, photographs, and haikus about relationship endings from around the world. This powerful storytelling experience explores gender, religion, sexual orientation, and cultural beliefs. Come to listen or share your own story— you might even try on the famous dress!

Stop and smell the daisies at the 10th Annual Kitayama Brothers Farm Gerbera Festival! Learn all about these bright and cheery blooms, from greenhouse tours to flower arranging demonstrations. Kids activities, a farmers market, PopUp ParkStore, food and beer round out the festivities.

World Oceans Day 2019

World Oceans Day is a day to celebrate our oceans by learning, creating, and getting empowered to protect the 71% of our planet that is seawater. CAPITOLA ROD & CUSTOM CLASSIC CAR SHOW

When: 6/8 from 9:00 am to 5 pm and 6/9 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Where: Capitola Village
Cost: Free

Classic cars cruise the coastline from Santa Cruz Boardwalk to Capitola, before settling in for a two-day show in the Village. View vintage rod, custom, classic and muscle cars while enjoying music, shopping, and dining just steps from the beach.

JAPANESE CULTURAL FAIR

Where: Mission Plaza

Celebrate our neighbors across the Pacific and the Japanese community in Santa Cruz! Enjoy booming Taiko drum performances and traditional crafts, dancing, and food. Additional workshops and demonstrations, including a tea ceremony, will be held nearby at The Zen Center and Aikido of Santa Cruz.

Summer Reading Kickoff Event: A Universe of Stories with Nikki Borodi

When: 6/9 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm
Where: San Lorenzo Park

Everyone in the community, from babies on up, is invited to sign up for the Santa Cruz Public Libraries’ Summer Reading Program, A Universe of Stories. Making it extra fun is a series of entertaining kick off events around the county starting with a special afternoon of acrobatic musical storytelling by Nikki Borodi at the Duck Island Stage at San Lorenzo Park.

Santa Cruz Derby Girls Pride Month Double-Header

What: Derby Girl Double-Header
Where: Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium
When: Saturday, June 29 at 4:00 pm

Come cheer on the Santa Cruz Derby Girls in this family-friendly Pride themed double-header.

Game one features the Saltwater Sassies, one of the Santa Cruz Derby Groms youth teams, against the Westcoast Jr. Derby Knockouts. If you have kids interested in derby then you’ll definitely want to come early to cheer on the Sassies. You can find out more about the Groms (ages 7-17) program here. 

The Harbor Hellcats from the adult league will host game 2 against the Westcoast Derby Knockouts from Ventura.

As always, there will be plenty of fun on and off the track. This month’s event includes facepainting and a professional photobooth.
