This weekend there are several movie events to choose from, including a free family movie night, a silent western filmed in Capitola a hundred years ago, and an inspiring women’s adventure film tour.
The Santa Cruz Warriors have home court advantage (twice), a live comedy special recording is happening at DNA’s Comedy Lab, and the annual bridal expo returns to the Cocoanut Grove.

Free Family Movie Night – Moana
When: 1/24 from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm
Where: Capitola Community Center – 4400 Jade Street, Capitola
Movie night at the Capitola Community Center makes easing into the weekend easy. Enjoy a free screening of Moana as well as free popcorn and candy. Feel free to bring your own food and drink (no alcohol please) and your coziest blankets, pillows, and low back chairs.
The Other Place
When: 1/24 – 1/26
Where: The Colligan Theater at The Tannery Arts Center
If you’re in the mood for mystery, suspense, and drama, catch The Other Place opening weekend at the Colligan Theater (Tannery). The play tells the story of a brilliant research scientist who suffers from the dementia she studies. Play runs through February 16.
SANTA CRUZ WARRIORS VS. WISCONSIN HERD
When: 1/24 at 7:00 pm
Where: Kaiser Permanente Arena
The first of two home games kicks off tonight, with the Santa Cruz Warriors facing off against Wisconsin Herd. After falling to Oklahoma City last week, it’s time to cheer the Warriors on to home team victory. Be one of the first 1,500 fans in attendance to receive a D’Angelo Russell bobblehead.

FREE EVENT: Family Literacy Fun Day

Where: Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Downtown Branch
Did you know January is Positive Parenting Awareness Month? Visit the Downtown library for Family Literacy Fun Day and enjoy a host of kid-friendly activities from arts and crafts to story time with the librarians. The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program will be on site with information, as well as other local services for children and families. Prizes for participating!
Women’s Adventure Film Tour

Where: Rio Theatre
This festival of short films celebrates big adventures by inspiring women—global athletes, mothers, business women, cliff divers, long distance hikers, and many more. While not rated, each film is suitable for the entire family. This film tour benefits Naretoi, a non-profit supporting girls’ education, women’s empowerment, local economic efforts, and cultural exchange in Maasailand, Kenya.
DNA’S COMEDY LAB: PHIL JOHNSON’S LIVE COMEDY SPECIAL FILMING

“The Testing Block” Centennial Showing

Calling all local history aficionados. Don’t miss this special centennial showing of the movie, The Testing Block, shot in Capitola in 1920. This silent western, starring William S. A wet redwood forest provides the perfect ecosystem for salamanders, and magical hiking conditions to get to know our amphibian friends better. On this 2-mile ranger-led excursion to Eagle Creek, you’ll learn about salamander life cycles, behaviors, adaptations, and the current threats facing them. Bring water, wear hiking shoes, and meet at the visitor center to start your journey.
