4th Annual Mole & Mariachi Festival: Sept. 10, 2016

Mole & Mariachi Festival-4

If wearing white after Labor Day is a fashion faux pas, it’s a good thing the Mole & Mariachi Festival takes place after the holiday. It could get messy!

The 4th Annual Mole & Mariachi Festival will take over Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park on Saturday, September 10, celebrating the famous sauce and signature dish of México.

Prepared with an average of twenty ingredients, from nuts and seeds to chiles and oftentimes chocolate, moles from ten local chefs including restaurants, catering companies, and home cooks, will be available for sampling at the festival.

As festival regulars and judges in this year’s mole cooking competition, we have three pieces of advice: arrive early, come hungry, and save room for dessert.

Here’s what’s in store at this year’s Mole & Mariachi Festival: [Read more…]

This Weekend in Santa Cruz: August 19th – 21st, 2016

Many summer event series are winding down, so if you’ve been meaning to attend Sunday Art & Music on the Beach, Free Friday Night Bands on the Beach, or a good ole fashioned family campfire, this is the weekend to make it happen.

You’ll also want to make room to enjoy a couple of local festivals. Scotts Valley brings another fantastic 2-day celebration of Art, Wine & Beer and the Santa Cruz Wharf shows its aloha spirit at Sunday’s Polynesian Festival.

As always, you’ll find a host of additional events listed under our features, including nature outings at our state parks and beaches, live music, and more.

A Call for Entries: How to Participate in the Santa Cruz County Fair

The Santa Cruz County Fair

The Santa Cruz County Fair will take place September 14-18, ushering in the fall season with five days of carnival games and rides, racing pigs and wild turkey stampedes, endless deep-fried food options, and our favorite—exhibition halls filled with local community talent.

Each year, the fair receives hundreds of entries from county residents, young and old, vying for bragging rights and blue ribbons on their homemade and homegrown goods, artwork, and collections.

If you or your child has created something, there’s a good chance you can and should enter it into the fair, and we’re here to help you get those entries in on time. [Read more…]

This Weekend in Santa Cruz: July 22nd – 24th, 2016

This Weeekend in-2

We have a great lineup of local theatre up ahead. While Santa Cruz Shakespeare continues a Midsummer Night’s Dream in the Grove (new venue!), two new musicals open this weekend: Fiddler on the Roof and Dorothy Potter and the Wizards of Oz.

Don’t forget, the Wharf to Wharf is this Sunday. If you’re trying to avoid the crowds it could be a good time to drive up Highway 1 and catch a Pokémon or two.

This weekend is all about perfect matches: music and ocean, beer and jam, and a 50th birthday party and cake from Gayle’s—yum!

Kick it off with some Family Stone at the Boardwalk, celebrate local history in Capitola, shop local in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and see what cool things some locals are up to, such as building a tiny railroad empire.

Santa Cruz Sandhills: The Henry Cowell Trail Less Traveled

A visit to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park usually means one thing: a walk through the Redwood Grove Loop Trail. This is the Henry Cowell most are familiar with and for obvious reasons. Centuries-old, skyscraping redwoods are hard to miss and quite the draw, especially when hosting out-of-town visitors.

But there’s another side to Henry Cowell that has more in common with the beach than a redwood forest and, in fact, used to be a beach. Sort of.

My #SantaCruzLife: Dead Central, Savory Churros, and a Serenading Salamander

Rain boots, flip flops, lather, rinse, repeat. The extreme weather conditions of late are keeping me on my toes from one day to the next, but the rainbows in between are the best!

Luckily, Santa Cruz is full of adventures, rain or shine, so get out and explore—eat somewhere new, get in touch with nature, remember the Dead—and bring an umbrella just in case.

In this edition of My #SantaCruzLife, I’m talking about churros…AGAIN, but I’ll also take you to two must visit places in Santa Cruz, the Grateful Dead Archive at UCSC and the Nature & History Center at Rancho del Oso. [Read more…]
